Dussehra – Victory of Good over Evil

Dussehra is a famous festival of Hindus which is celebrated on the tenth day of Shukla paksha in the month of Ashwin. The festival signifies the victory of good over evil. On Dussehra Lord Ram killed Ravan. Goddess Durga also killed the demon – Mahishasur on this day. Dussehra is also known by the name Vijayadashami.

How is Dussehra celebrated

  • On Dussehra Kshatriya people worship weapons.
  • The effigies (पुतले) of Ravan, Kumbhkaran and Meghanad are burnt to celebrate the victory of good over evil.
  • Fairs are organized at various places.
  • At some places people also worship Dussehra in the morning. For this Dussehra is created on the floor. To create Dussehra cow dung is kept on the ground. Then water, moli, roli, rice, flowers, jawar, deepak, dhoop, banana, mooli, jaggery and dakshina is offered. Then its parikrama is done. After this kheer-puri is served to Brahmin.
  • Dussehra celebrations in the cities of Kullu and Mysore are very famous.

Celebrations in Kullu

In Kullu people worship their village god. Processions(जुलुस) are taken out of Gods in beautiful palanquins(पालकी) with people dancing and singing on the way. Dussehra is celebrated in Kullu for 10 days.

Celebrations in Mysore

Dussehra is decorated in the entire city of Mysore. The famous Mysore Palace is lit with 1 Lac light bulbs which makes it a ‘must visit’ place during Dussehra festival. Dussehra celebrations takes place for 10 days in Mysore. Various types of religious and cultural events are organized in the premises of Mysore Palace. Elephants are also decorated. Also, Beautiful processions are organized in the city.
