Story Behind Karva Chauth
The story behind Karva Chauth is of Savitri and Satyavan. Satyavan was born with a short life span. While he was cutting the wood in forest, a snake bit him and he died instantly. As Yamaraj(the God of death) came to take Satyavan’s soul, Savitri requested him while crying, to not take his husband.
Yamaraj asked Savitri to ask for anything else except her husband’s life. Now Savitri asked Yamaraj to give her the boon of becoming mother of many children. Yamaraj promised to do so. Since, Savitri was loyal to her husband, so Yamaraj had to grant life to Satyavan to fulfil his promise to Savitri. This way Savitri saved the life of Satyavan.
This story shows the eternal love and pure relationship between a husband and wife. That is why Karva Chauth is celebrated.
How to celebrate Karva Chauth 2022
The fast of Karva Chauth starts at dawn. Women eat ‘sargi’ before sunrise which is given to them by their mother-in-law. The newly married women would get gifts from her parents, in-laws and husband. After eating ‘sargi’, the fast starts and not even water is drunk before puja in the evening.
In the evening, at about 4 or 5 PM, the ladies get ready for pooja wearing beautiful sarees and jewelry. At some places the pooja is done in temples, where ladies get together. Ladies exchange their Karvas with each other. After the pooja, the ladies can take some fluid.
At night, when the beautiful moon of Karva Chauth appears, the ladies see the moon through a sieve and offer some offerings to the moon. After that ladies take dinner with their husband.
Families celebrate Karva chauth with great joy. Huge celebrations take place in families especially with newly wed couple. The festival is celebrated among other religions also along with Hindu religion.
