The festival of Annakoot is also known by the name ‘Govardhan Puja’ or ‘Annakut’. It is the fourth day in the five day celebrations of Diwali. Delicious recipes are made and offered to Lord Krishna.
Devotees worship the Govardhan Hill, since it was lifted by Lord Krishna on this day. This festival has great significance in the city of Braj.
Story Behind Govardhan Puja
During Dvapara yuga, Lord Krishna used to live in Braj. At that time people of Braj used to worship Lord Indra for giving rain, air etc. But Lord Krishna asked the people to worship Govardhan hill since it provided with all the resources of trees, air etc.
Villagers stopped worshipping Lord Indra. This made Lord Indra very angry and started heavy rains in Braj. To protect people from the heavy rains, Lord Krishna lifted Govardhan hill on his little finger and asked all the villagers and cattle to take shelter under it.
It rained continuously for 7 days. During this time Lord Krishna kept the mountain lifted on his little finger. At last Lord Indra realized his mistake and stopped the rains.
That is why Lord Krishna is worshipped and offered delicious dishes on this day, to always protect us.
