Lohri Festival

Lohri is a winter festival in India, celebrated ever year on the night before Makar Sakranti. On this day, people create a bonfire and gather around it, singing traditional songs and enjoy delicious snacks.

Why is Lohri celebrated

Lohri is celebrated every year to mark the end of winter season and welcoming of the summer season and longer days.

The festival has special significance for farmers, since they pray to god for a good harvesting season.

How to celebrate Lohri

On this day, people wear bright colored clothes and make delicious dishes such as makki di roti, sarson da saag etc.

At night people create bonfire. They walk around the bonfire as it is said to bring prosperity. Also, some of the eatables such as gur, gajak, til etc are fed into the fire. People perform dances such as bhangra around the bonfire to celebrate the festival.
