Lord Balarama was born in Dvapara Yuga. He was the elder brother of Lord Krishna. Balarama is the avatar of Shesha, the serpent on which Lord Vishnu rests. Let us now come to the story of Lord Balarama birth :-
In Dvapara Yuga, when the evil increased on earth due to the sinful behavior of Kansa, Indra and the other Gods went to Lord Vishnu for help. Lord Vishnu promised them that he would take avatar on Earth to end the evil reign of Kansa.
When the sister of Kansa – Devaki got married to Vasudeva, an Akashwani was made that – the eigth son of Devaki and Vasudeva would kill Kansa. Hearing this, Kansa became scared and imprisoned both Devaki and Vasudeva. Kansa killed the first six children born of Devaki.
The seventh son was going to be Balarama. To protect the child from being killed by Kansa, Lord Vishnu instructed to transfer the unborn child from the womb of Devaki to the womb of Rohini. Rohini was the other wife of Vasudeva and used to live with her cousin Nanda Maharaj in Braj after the imprisonment of Vasudeva. This way Balarama was born to Rohini in Braj.
That is why Balaram is also known by the name Sankarshana meaning the ‘one who was dragged away’.
