Dhanteras marks the beginning of five day festival of Diwali. People buy jewelry, utensils etc on the occasion of Dhanteras. In India, Dhanteras will be celebrated on 2nd, Nov, 2021 this year. Dhanteras is celebrated on trayodashi of Krishna Paksha during the month of Kartik.
Fairs are organized all over the country to celebrate the festival. On Dhanteras, Lord Dhanvantri is worshipped because it is said that on this day Lord Dhanvantri appeared from Samudra Manthan.
