Holi is one of the biggest festivals in India. Not only India, but the festival is celebrated all around the world. Holi is also known as the ‘Festival of Colors’. The day before Holi is celebrated as Chotti Holi or Holika Dahan.
Holi is a two day festival, which starts on the evening of Purnima in the month of Phalguna. In the evening, Holika Dahan takes place and on the next day Rangwali Holi is celebrated. In 2022, Holika Dahan will done on 17th, March, 2022 and Rangwali Holi will be played on 18th, March, 2022.
Why is Holi celebrated
- The festival celebrates the love between Radha and Krishna. Krishna had a dark complexion, on the other hand, her beloved Radha was fair. This made Krishna jealous of Radha and complained about it to his mother. To calm his son, Yashoda maa, told Krishna that he can apply any color on the face of Radha. Krishna, mischievously applied color on the Radha’s face to make her look like him. That is why people play with colors on this day to celebrate the eternal love between Radha and Krishna.
How to celebrate Holi
- Holi is enjoyed by the people of all age groups. On this day people apply dry and wet colors on each other to celebrate the festival.
- Delicious dishes and snacks are created on this day and shared with family, friends, neighbors etc. Gujiya is a special snack created on Holi.
- The Holi celebrations of Vrindavan, Mathura and Dwarka are world famous. Tourists from all around the world visit these cities to be part of grand Holi celebrations.
